Scott Ross – This isn’t about technology. It’s about responsibility
About this Episode:
In moments of technological revolution, the real question is never just what can we build?
It’s what are we changing in the process?
In this conversation, Scott Ross reflects on the turning point when cinema shifted from physical film to digital light — when imagination moved from practical effects to pixels. As a pioneer of digital visual effects and co-founder of one of the industry’s most influential studios, he witnessed the transformation from the inside.
We explore what it means to lead through disruption, how innovation reshapes entire industries, and why technology without responsibility can easily outrun wisdom.
Scott shares insights on risk, reinvention, and the courage required to stand at the edge of change. From Hollywood’s biggest productions to the deeper philosophical questions behind digital creation, this episode examines more than visual effects — it examines impact.
This isn’t just about technology.
It’s about leadership at the moment the future arrives.
Episode Transcript:
Mark Chait :
What about innovation is wonderful and what can be dangerous, you know, I mean, innovation is great, but I think the speed of the progress right now, especially with AI, is something of so much concern. I would love to hear your thoughts about that. .
Scott Ross :
I think that the changes that are happening in AI, once again, getting to that paradox of yin and yang, there are a lot of things that are going to be a whole lot better because of it, but there's a lot of things that are going to be a whole lot worse. And it could be, you know, fatalistic. It could be a way in which we as a society, as a human race, no longer exists.
Mark Chait :
Yes, I agree.
